Internet Privacy Protection and Privacy Protection Software

    Internet Security
Whenever your computer is connected to the Internet it becomes an open door for many security threats - hackers, snoops, identity thieves, viruses, worms and Trojans. Even if you are not surfing the web, if you have a connection to the Internet you are highly vulnerable. A personal firewall and antivirus software can be a valuable defense against these online threats, keeping your computer and your personal information safe.

    Online Privacy protection
Most Internet users feel little or no concern about their PC Privacy protection. When you surf the Internet, any web resource you access can gather and record usage information about you such as your IP address, location, time of day, browser type, browser language, software configuration, operating system you are using, web pages last visited and other information that you might want to keep confidential.
Having privacy protection software (privacy software) enables you shield your current connection when you visit websites, download files, or use web-based e-mail accounts and hide, all traffic to and from your computer. This prevents online snoops from tracking your surfing habits and using it for undesirable purposes.
There are three areas that safeguard Internet Privacy and Security:
    • Firewall Security
    • Virus blocking
    • Privacy Protection
If you concern about Internet privacy, you should use privacy software. When your PC is equipped with all of three types of privacy software, it has the greatest chance of surviving privacy or security attacks.

Why do I need Internet privacy software?

Most Internet users feel little or no concern about their online privacy protection. And while there is no actual physical danger to web surfing, chat, or e-mail, most users are either poorly informed or misinformed about what really happens while they're online.
It's easy to forget that the Internet is a two-way connection. You can use the Internet to see content that resides on other computer systems around the world. But remember - those systems can see what's on your computer, too. In other words, the Internet is more like a two-way mirror than a television set.
Many PC users already have a virus or a firewall solution installed on their computers, but very often they are still missing the most crucial component of all - privacy protection. Having full-time privacy protection software enables you to "encrypt", or hide, all traffic to and from your computer. This prevents online snoops from tracking your surfing habits and using it for undesirable purposes.
Internet Privacy protection includes the following privacy software:
    • Anonymous surfing software
    • Real-time SSL encryption
    • Erase computer activity traces (Internet privacy protection software)

Why you need anonymous surfing software

Internet is full of potential risk to your privacy and security:
    - Every time you surf the web you leave traces of your Internet activity that can reveal your real-life identity.

    - Any web resource you access can gather and record usage information about you such as your IP address, location, time of day, browser type, browser language, software configuration, operating system you are using, web pages last visited and other information that you might want to keep confidential.

    - Using this information hackers, identity thieves, spammers and other people who want to get access to your personal information can monitor your browsing habits and activities, spy upon you, steal personal information and exploit security holes in your system to cause damage to your computer. It is possible to restrict accessing any information or provide customized content to specific IP.

    Solution:
Using special anonymous surfing software (privacy software) you can protect your privacy and shield your current connection when you visit web sites, download files or use web-based e-mail accounts.

    Online Security Threats

    Security attacks

There are various forms of attacks that exploit weakneses in security. Many of these may cause loss of service or system crashes. While viruses and privacy concerns could be considered as passive threats, hackers take a more active approach to attack your PC directly. Without full firewall protection, hackers and privacy thieves have an open doorway to your PC and all of your personal information. Some attacks are passive, meaning information is monitored; others are active, meaning the information is altered with intent to corrupt or destroy the data or the network itself.

    Viruses

Half a dozen new viruses are created every day with the sole purpose of causing havoc on your PC. The best line of defense is powerful anti-virus software designed to stop damage to your computer from multiple sources such as web surfing, e-mail and rouge programs. Viruses are compact binary codes that infects a computer mainly through email attachments, downloads, network files access or protable media like floppies or CDROMs and can destroy, modify or corrupt computer information.

    Worms

A program that makes copies of itself; for example, from one disk drive to another, or by copying itself using email or another transport mechanism. The worm may do damage and compromise the security of the computer. It may arrive in the form of a joke program or software of some sort. The primary mission of many worms is to spread to all network connected computers and install malicous programs for immediate or future activation, eg. for a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack upon remote activation.

    Trojans/Backdoors

An application cloaked as a legitimate application that is sneaked into a computer via network file access, downloads or email links. Trojans can delete/corrupt/modify files, modify system's security configuration or even delete hard-drive partitions. Hackers can disguise a small server programs like Netbus or Back Orifice and sneak it into a computer. There, these illicit servers can open ports to allow hackers to access files and the operating system by opening TCP or UDP ports.

    Spyware

Stand-alone programs that can secretly monitor system activity. These may detect passwords or other confidential information and transmit them to another computer. Spyware can be downloaded from web sites, email messages, and instant messengers. A user may unknowingly trigger spyware by accepting an End User License Agreement from a software program linked to the spyware.

    Adware

Programs that secretly gather personal information through the Internet and relay it back to another computer, generally for advertising purposes. This is often accomplished by tracking information related to Internet browser usage or habits. Adware can be downloaded from web sites, email messages, and instant messengers.

    Remote Access programs

Programs that allow another computer to gain information or to attack or alter your computer, usually over the Internet.

    Question of the Day

    • What are cookies and how do they work?

A cookie is a piece of data which often includes an unique identifier, that is sent to your browser from a web site you visit, stores as a file on your computer, identifies you as a unique user and track your web usage. There are two commonly known types of cookies. One is called a "session" or "non-persistent cookie." It is a cookie that only exists as long as your session on the web site lasts and expires as soon as you leave the web site. It is used to facilitate your activities within that site. The second type of cookie is a "persistent cookie". It exists beyond the life of your session and may live for months or years. A persistent cookie is created in order to recognize users when they return to a website. It enables the site to offer a customized experience tailored to that user - such as remembering your name and password on protected login pages. Cookie data is stored on the user's hard drive. The filename is different for each platform. For example, on Windows machines, cookie data is stored in *.txt files. A web site may set an expiration date for a cookie it delivers. If no expiration date is specified, the cookie is deleted when the user closes the browser.
