What is an IP address?

IP address is an unique string of numbers that identifies a computer/device/server on a network. When you connect to the Internet, either via your ISP (Internet service provider - AOL, RR, NTL, etc.), or your office LAN connection, you are assigned an IP address. This address identifies your computer from the other computers. An IP address can be private, for use on a LAN, or public, for use on the Internet or other WAN. Your IP address can be either static, meaning it never changes, or dynamic, meaning each time you dial-in or login you are assigned a new address for that session. You can check with your internet service provider or network administrator to find out if your computer uses static or dynamic IP Address. If you receive a dynamic IP address from your internet provider, it will likely be different on your next session. So if you need your IP address for later use, you need to check it when you log on for that session. IP addresses are usually expressed as four decimal numbers, each ranging from 0 to 255, separated by periods. For example, 127.0.0.1.

What is the difference between static and dynamic IP addresses?

There are actually two ways of assigning IP numbers, static and dynamic. Static IP numbers are permanently assigned to a computer/device. Dynamic IP numbers are only assigned to a computer/device at the time it connects with the Internet. Dynamic IP numbers can change every time the computer/device reconnects to the Internet. Dynamic IP numbers are used to maximize the use of the numbers available to an organization or an Internet Provider.

What are private and public IP addresses?

A computer on the Internet is identified by its IP address. In order to avoid IP address conflicts, IP addresses are publicly registered with the Network Information Centre (NIC). An IP address can be private, for use on a LAN, or public, for use on the Internet. Computers on private TCP/IP LANs however do not need public IP addresses, since they do not need to be accessed by the public. For this reason, the NIC has reserved certain Addresses that will never be registered publicly. These are known as private IP addresses, and are found in the following ranges:
From 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255
From 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255
From 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255

What is a domain name?

Domain names, like IP addresses, are the method used to access a website. People remember words much easier than numbers. A website can be accessed either way. Domain names are split into different categories depending on the function and affiliation of organizations.
